After some very loud snoring, many sinus infections, and listening to you unsuccessfully try to breathe through your nose, we decided something had to be done. Mommy took you to an ENT doctor and it was determined that you had very enlarged adenoids almost entirely blocking your nasal passage and they definitely needed to be removed. This will hopefully help you sleep and breathe better. Your classmates and Finley will thank us later also :) Your teachers joke that Finley will make a great wife someday b/c she's the only one in the class that can fall asleep listening to you snore and not be bothered...b/c she's used to it! So we scheduled your surgery for this morning and off we went. I was really unsure how you'd do. We did our best to explain it all to you as clearly as possible, I didn't want to trick you into it and you hate me later for it. So I tried to explain that it would hurt etc. All you really cared about was the part where we promised that if you were brave through the surgery and process, you would get presents when you were done! You took that to heart....everytime we even mentioned surgery, a big grin would cross your face and you would say, "I get Arthur?" or "I get stanley?" Whatever train it was that day that you wanted....so you really just wanted the presents! So this morning came and we had to wake you up in your bed really early and take you out in the cold to the hospital. We checked in with your Thomas train and Thomas pillow in tow. You were very good all the way through the beginning process. They gave you some "happy medicine" as they called it, a sedative so they could start your IV etc. This is the part where mommy wishes she would have had her video camera to capture b/c it was pretty funny. You were really loopy, out of it, just laughing at everything and very sleepy. And then they came in took you from us very fast so you wouldn't notice. Off you went....so very brave. The procedure didn't take very long and the Dr. came back in in no time at all and said all went well, pretty boring in his opinion which is good news in the medical field. He said they would come and get us when you were in recovery. And boy did they ever! That was the awful part! When I walked into recovery, you were in a crib and you were screaming and had to be restrained b/c you were trying your hardest to pull your IV out! The large male nurse that was attempting to hold you down assured me that with your persistence and strength even at 2 1/2 yrs old, that you would definitely play football someday. It took all of my strength and his assistance to keep you from pulling it out and try to calm you down but to no avail. You weren't even fully awake yet from the anesthesia but you were desperately trying to get that IV out. Blood was coming out of your nose and then you were thrashing around so much that it was everywhere! The entire scene looked a lot worse than it was. After about 20 minutes of mommy trying to restrain you, I decided to switch places with Daddy and let him try. After about 20 more minutes with Daddy, blood all over his jacket, you finally came out of the anesthesia and decided that you would wake up. You did rip out your own IV though! I don't know where you get your fiesty-ness from :) So then you got to come back to the room where Grandma Julie, Mommy and Daddy were waiting patiently for you. You were semi back to normal then. All you wanted to do was eat. You weren't interested in the slush, juice or popsicles they were trying to give you...you wanted food! I've never seen you inhale goldfish and animal crackers so fast! It was the best water you ever drank also. That's definitely the longest time you've gone w/o food before. 12+ hrs is a long time for you! Once you ate something, all you cared about was playing with your Thomas trains....and since the Grandma's thought it was Christmas all over again, you had plenty of new ones to play with. So we hung out in the room for a while to recover, went for a short wagon ride around the hospital to kill some time, and then we got to go home. On the way home you tried to tell us that you were awake for the entire surgery and that it "hurt a little bit." You ate every 30 minutes for the rest of the day, took a long nap and recovered quite well. To look at you now, you wouldn't know you are adenoid free, but I did check on you quite a few times through the night while you were sleeping and I didn't hear any snoring! We went through a lot of emotions today but overall I think it will be worth it in the end. And even though I'm sure you'll try to milk this thing for all it's worth, you appear to be back to normal already 24 hrs later!
